Painting in France in the 15th Century
By:Fr Elsig
Published on 2004 by 5Continents
|Since the landmark exhibition of the Primitifs francais (French Primitives) a century ago, 15th-century French painting has received growing critical attention through the writings of Charles Sterling, Michel Laclotte, Nicole Reynaud, and Francois Avril, who have revealed numerous previously overlooked personalities (Barthelemy d'Eyck, Andre d'Ypres, Antoine de Lonhy, Jean Hey, etc.) and a lively network of European cultural exchange. That complex map of artisic production is discussed in three sections: first, the interaction between the French courts and Paris during the period of International Gothic (1380-1435); second, the diffusion of Ars Nova (the Flemish illusionist style) through France under Charles VII and Louis XI in 1435-83; third, how a specifically French style based on Jean Fouquet's model subsequently became standardised, developing alongside rhetorical literature under Charles VIII and Louis XII in 1483-1515.|--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
