What is exactly the meaning of this normative formula used in the latin grammars from varro to alcuin,is to be found by paying attention to each principle there quoted (natura furnishes linguistic laws analogical to the laws of the world, and primi, tive, never changing forms, from which ratio creates systems by generation and movement ; auctoritas and consuetudo present every outlaw form issued from poetic beauty or ugly mistake),and also to the teaching situation and psychological circumstances in account of barbarian invasions and christian time. Christian first refused latinitas as an elitist formula loaded with pagan values and refusing the indocti (the vox theory considered them as animals); but finally latinitas is accepted with double auctoritas, some new commentaries, and pertinent reading. Nothing apparently is changed in the formula, but every, thing now is new, for it becomes a formula for religious salute and human dig, nity.here we find reemployment of the same words with a new meaning : it is an economical technique frequently used by christians, mainly in art. Consequently, the assertion that latinitas is the same from varro to alcuin must be revised. it seams to be the same, but it is not.
